The small suspensionless four-wheeled vehicles that are most commonly seen traversing the sandy terrains of beaches are called Go-Karts. These vehicles, however, are not limited to sandy terrains. Depending on their type, they can be used to negotiate grassy, muddy, and rocky terrains. They come in all shapes, sizes, colors and designs. Some are built with machines and some are completely engineless (pedal karts). There are some that are built for adults and some are exclusively for kids.
So, what is a Go-Kart type that is perfect for thrill-seekers? Some karts are meant for competitions and are equipped with high-powered machines that can withstand a number of laps around a race track. Some models are also built with high-performance engines and are meant for rocky and muddy terrains. These kind of terrains are more popularly known as outdoor tracks by karting enthusiasts. Some outdoor karting vehicles (off road go karts, dune buggies, ATV’s) can also traverse grassy terrains and are perfect for those who want to spend Sunday afternoons karting in their backyards or nearby mountains.
Rent a Kart
These four-wheeled mini-vehicles can be bought or can be rented. Some kart racing tracks rent out their race karts to those who want to unwind on the race tracks. Many even offer lessons for beginners who are curious about the sport. Those who want to have their personal mini-vehicles can buy from kart dealers who assemble, build and customize.
Build Your Own Kart
One may even choose to assemble the vehicle by having the parts delivered to his or her residence with the aid of a kart instruction manual. Go kart kits are offered with complete assembly instructions and options for building your own go kart at home. This can include a racing kart, dune buggy, wooden kart or even pocket bike or mini bikes should you so choose.
Engineless Go-Karts
What is a go-kart model that is less sophisticated and budget-friendly? As mentioned earlier, not all karts are motor-powered. Many home-made go karts are motor less so they have to be self propelled, pedaled or pushed by another individual. Some people put together metal scraps or wood or both and come up with a sturdy and machine-less go-karts.
Wood Go-Karts
Wooden go karts such as the soap box derby karts are easily constructed using numerous go kart plans or blueprints found online. These types usually need another person to push from behind in order to get the kart moving. Others install pedals to dispense with the need for another person to push or pull. These types are usually the best go karts for kids because of the absence of an exhaust that emits health-threatening carbon monoxide.
Go Karts with Engines (two stroke vs. four stroke)
The less powerful go-carts have four-stroke engines while the high-performance types have two-stroke engines. Two-stroke engines run on electricity can usually run up to 20 minutes when fully charged. It is the safest engine go cart for kids because it has less chances of catching fire compared versus the four-stroke engine. It can go as fast as 160 miles per hour.
The four-stroke engine, on the other hand, run on fuel and is usually fed with regular gasoline (petrol). These petrol engines are what are typically used in racing go-karts used for professional racing. Since it is fuel-powered, it emits fumes and is not safe for indoor use.
These types of engines can have 90 horsepower and they run at a speeds in excess of 200 miles per hour. Whatever type, size, or shape a go-kart is, karting can be a good recreational activity spent together with family or friends. It is arguably the best alternative to the highly dangerous drag racing without losing the fun, excitement and adrenaline rush that one gets from drag racing. It’s also a good way to spend a kid’s pent-up energy and an interesting way to teach kids strategy and to help them develop alert minds.
